NOV. 1, 2014 SUNNYVALE, Calif. – Carrie Jube’s
second place overall finish led BYU women’s cross country to its first
ever West Coast Conference Championship Saturday morning at Baylands
Park course in Sunnyvale, California. [Since the conference moved from the Mountain West Conference.]

“It was a remarkable day team-wise, and individually we had some outstanding performances,” BYU head coach Patrick Shane said. “It was by far our best team race.”

Jube, a junior from Provo, Utah, completed the 6K race in 19:49. Jube
stayed near the front the whole race but separated from the lead pack
towards the end of the race and actually took the lead for a few
minutes. She was eventually passed late in the race but finished
comfortably in second place.
“I felt really good about my race,” Jube said. “I went in to the race
thinking that my goal would be to place in the top 10. I started out
conservatively, but stuck around the front pack and ended up feeling
really good. At one point, I decided to make a move and take the lead.”

The Cougars’ top four runners all finished in the top nine with Andrea Nelson Harrison finishing fourth overall with a time of 19:56. Makenna Smith came in sixth with a time of 20:04 and Jennica Redd finished ninth in 20:26.

“For Carrie Jube
to be second place in the conference meet was quite a thrill,” Shane
said. “Andrea at fourth, was a major improvement from last year. It was
another solid race for her. Makenna brought it at sixth and really came
on at the end. McKenzie Weir and Kelsey Brown, our fifth and sixth runners, brought it the last mile of the race and our question of finding a fifth runner was answered.”

The course was a mostly flat, sandy, hard-packed trail according to
Shane. And BYU’s race strategy was to go out fast, push the pace and
finish strong. The Cougars were able to execute their plan well with
their top four runners staying in the top 10 the majority of the race.

“Every single athlete ran their race plan perfectly and executed
their individual and team goals right down the line,” Shane said.

Winning the conference championship had been a goal of the team all
season. But the team knew it would have to run its best race
collectively to do it. For Jube, the Cougars had the breakout
performance she had hoped for.

“It means a lot to our team and me,” Jube said. “We know the
potential that we have. We have been waiting for a breakthrough race for
our team to show people what we can do as a team. The talent has always
been there but it’s been a long time coming.”

For Harrison, a senior, a team captain, and BYU’s top runner this season, the win was especially gratifying.

“In training we have been really focusing on this race,” Harrison
said. “We knew we could do this but we had to do it together. We all
needed to step our game up. We saw that happen with so many people.
Everyone knew they had to give it their all. To know your team gave
everything it had today to become a conference championship means so
much.”

The championship is Shane’s 25th conference championship over 35
years of coaching but his first since the 2006 season in the Mountain
West Conference.

“Every single one of these girls rose to the occasion and I’m just
happy for them,” Shane said. “It’s been a long time since we’ve won a
conference championship. I’m just really proud of these women.”
Kelsey Brown and Alyssa Steed
also had strong performances finishing in sixth and seventh for BYU and
16th and 19th overall, respectively. The Cougars have another bye week
before the Mountain Regional Championships on Nov. 14 hosted by the
University of New Mexico.

Before I came to the States, I never thought I would live and train in America. I lived a happy life in South Africa. Most races I would win easily. My training partners were all guys. I was a big fish in a small pond. In order to develop every ounce of the talent I had been given, deep down I knew I needed to be training and racing with girls who were better than me. When I got to BYU I was a small fish in a big pond. It was a humbling experience at first. All the girls around me were incredibly talented and dedicated to their running goals, yet so balanced in every aspect of their lives.

I made instant friends on the team and training with the girls was such fun! I was excited to see my times steadily improve through Coach Shane’s training. With the help of the solid support system of expert coaches, gym trainers, dietitians, psychologists and academic tutors I was able to train and compete with the best girls on the team, maximize the genetic potential I was given, and reach my athletic goals.

The Recruiting Process

I first met Coach Shane in Beijing China, at the World Junior Championships. He saw my name on the Junior 800m world-ranking list. He came over to the hotel and called up to my room on the hotel phone. I don’t know what made him choose to recruit me, but I’m sure glad he did. I was taking a nice long nap (sleeping off a disappointing race in the first round
of the 800m where I had been boxed-in and failed to make the semi-final). Little did I know, answering that phone call would change my life. Going to BYU afforded me the amazing opportunity to train at an elite level with endless resources to enhance my performance. It allowed me to gain an invaluable education at one of the most prestigious universities in the States and build life-long friendships with my training partners. Through the unique availability of funds available for Track and Field at BYU I was lucky enough to travel to many fun and exciting places throughout the United States and Europe, all expenses paid for.

Why I Chose BYU

I chose BYU for the coach, team, academics and location. Coach Shane has coached multiple Olympians; he has more than 30 years of experience training elite level women.
I chose BYU for the team, everyone was focused their track careers but were normal fun-loving girls
I chose BYU because of their stellar academic reputation.
I chose BYU because it is located below the most beautiful mountain range, and it reminded me of home.

What Makes Coach Shane Different

I have been with Coach Shane for 4 years as an athlete and have now worked as his team manager for 2 years. Two things stand out that make him different: One, coach’s unique ability to make his athletes want to do well. Coach Shane’s athletes have an inner desire to run faster than they ever have, to push the limits, and to work as hard as it takes to do just that. And two, his kind caring attitude to every single one of his athletes. He loves all the girls on the team; he gets excited for them, worries about them, and tries his best to help them reach their dreams.

My team mates

They make me smile. Each girl brings her unique personality traits to the team. We have some girls who bring their intensity and work ethic, some their sense of humor, some their crying shoulder or their endless optimism. Then we have the talkers, the dancers, the fun-finders, the workaholics, and the jokesters.

Being teammates in a sport such as distance running forms an unparalleled bond between girls. We always joke that there is not one topic in the world we have not discussed on a run— and I can assure you it is true! When I think of my teammates I have a flood of memories of our yearly Pre-Season Cross Country Altitude Camp at Park City, epic canyon runs, post long-run breakfast parties, Halloween dress-up runs and all the fun we have gotten up to when we travel to meets. (Both with the coach’s knowledge and without!) I think about the support we give each other through illness and injury, through rough races, rough workouts and generally rough days. But I also think about the epic moments when my teammates became National Champions, when they made World Championship teams, when they raced at the Olympic trails, when they smashed their personal bests, when they outkicked their rival, when they raced just as well as coach said they could and the whole team was ecstatic for them! And then I remember the many celebratory chocolate shakes!

Academics

For me personally, academics has always been a challenge. I almost cannot believe I am now working on my Masters degree here at BYU. My lecturers have been great! They always delivered real-world knowledge and a high level of professionalism. They love athletes and whilst competing, would go out of their way to help me catch up any work I missed. I came from South Africa where I trained with a personal coach outside of the university. It was very stressful to try and schedule both pursuits; yet, I wanted to make the wise choice and be able to study and run. The first day I got to BYU I walked right into the office of the academic advisor. She put me into all the classes I needed and worked around my training and lifting schedule. For the first time I was able to succeed as student and as a runner. The system is set-up to allow you to do both. My full scholarship allowed me to gain an education I would have otherwise never have been able to afford. Now I have the credentials to get a job that I am not only passionate about but that will make a good living.

My Worst Experience in the States

I would say missing family is one of the hardest parts of going to school far from home. However when you do get to go home, everyone is excited to see you and you can do no wrong! [Angela’s mum and sister also came over to see her. They traveled to, biked, and hiked around some beautiful parts of the USA.]

Best Memories and Highlights

It’s a good thing awesome races never fade from your memory. One overcast day at a meet in California, I was running the West Regional Steeplechase Championships. As I was warming up, Coach Shane came over to me and said, “Angela you can win this, and not only can you win it, you can go sub 10 minutes today.”

I said, “Yes coach,” but in my mind I was thinking…. “He must be joking, me… win? And run under 10 minutes… no way!” I decided right then and there I had nothing to lose by believing him. In my head I already had the race won. As the race progressed I vividly remember thinking, “I feel no pain,” and, “Wow, I still feel no pain!” I felt amazing for the entire 3 k!

With 800m to go, an athlete from University of Southern California made a huge surge to the front. I covered the move like it was no big deal. I felt powerful and fast as I sailed over the final water jump and ran over the line in 9.58. Looking back on it I could focus on what I didn’t get in that race: missing the Olympic B standard to compete for South Africa by 3 seconds. Or what I did get, an incredible coach who believed in me, a race I will never forget, the win, and of course, post-race celebratory milkshakes with my best friend and teammate. Oh…. and some post-race rollercoaster’s at one of the biggest theme parks in the USA!

Advice and Mistakes to Avoid

Deciding to come to BYU was a big decision; there were so many things to consider and many uncertainties. It really helps to talk to someone from your home country who has been in the States and can offer you advice. Everyone has a different experience so remember that a big portion of your experience in the States will be determined by what you make of it.

The scholarship money and education I received at BYU is worth thousands upon thousands of dollars and has opened doors in my life I never imagined were possible. It was an incredible opportunity, and all I had to do in return was to do what I love to do…to run! To run surrounded by a support system of coaches, physiotherapist, sports psychologists, nutritionists, academic advisors and weight lifting coaches.
At 5,000ft altitude here in the high mountain elevation of Utah, you'll do work loads that scientifically target energy systems specific to your race. We train in the surrounding mountains at higher elevation as well.
Elevation Facts: Live High Train High. Compete Low.

It's likely that you have trained at low elevations. If you've ever competed at higher elevations and been left gasping for breath, you'll understand that training at elevation (altitude) gives you a huge competitive advantage. I feel that altitude training is basically legalized blood doping. If you want to come to the states to train, think seriously about going to a school at sea level. You don't want to be disappointed when you travel to high altitudes to compete, and run poorly because of your oxygen levels.

Read the simple explanation from Eric Wong below to see the science behind my statement:

"Altitude training is based on the premise that when you’re at altitude, there’s less oxygen in the air, making exercise a lot harder. The higher you go, the less oxygen there is, the harder exercise is.

Because of this, it’s theorized that altitude will force your body to adapt increase your red blood cell (RBC) count and thus improving aerobic performance, delaying onset of anaerobic energy production and improving recovery. The bottom line is that…
This is important – remember it, you’ll need this knowledge later. This is the theory, anyway, but lucky for us, it’s been rigorously tested by scientists from around the world.

Some cool sports science history – altitude training gained huge popularity after the Olympic Games in 1968 which were held in Mexico City. Mexico City is at an altitude of 2300 m, so for those athletes who weren’t prepared for this, it was a huge shock and the exercise physiologists were put to work to figure out how to use this to their advantage.
Now, as mentioned in the Altitude definition above, there are 3 main combinations of altitude training that have been studied: Live High Train High, Live Low Train High and Live High Train Low."

PROVO — During his 32 years of coaching, BYU women's track coach Patrick Shane has never seen anything like it. During the 1,600-meter girls finals at the BYU Invitational track meet Saturday, not one, not two, but the three top finishers all broke the Utah state record for the event.

Mountain View senior Ashleigh Warner edged out East's Natalie Shields and North Summit's Erica Birk with a time of 4:50.13 to win the event and put herself in the record books.

"What was done here today is unprecedented," said Shane. "Never in all my years watching this event, or any event, have I seen something like this. The runners you saw out there today are the best in state history and you may never see something like this happen again."
Shields set a furious pace early with Warner passing her late to take the victory, preventing Shields from setting her second state record in as many days. The day before Shields broke Rosy Gardner's 18-year state record in the 3,200 meters with a time of 10:22.89.

Of all the excited observers, no one seemed as animated as Shane, who has not just signed Warner, Shields and Birk, but also Bingham's Ashley Young, who finished fourth in the event. The foursome lead what Shane believes is the best incoming class he's signed over his 32 years coaching at BYU.

"There's no question that these are the best group of girls I've ever signed," said Shane.

According to Shane the altitude-adjusted time, which is well-accepted nationally, would put Shields' 3,200-meter time at 10:08, which would put her at the top nationally.

"These girls have such great support from not only their coaches, but from their families — it's just incredible the talent that this state produces from year to year and this is the best I've ever seen," said Shane. "It's such a thrill for me, as BYU's head coach, to have the opportunity to coach such great potential as this. It's truly a blessing."

Davis High dominated the overall 3A-5A competition, scoring a combined total of 142.5 points over 36 events, outdistancing second-place Riverton by a full 38.5 points. Davis finished first in the men's competition with 80.5 combined points, while Bingham just edged out Davis in the women's 63-62.
BYU women’s track team came home with an 11th place finish in the 2012 NCAA Division I Indoor Track and Field Championships over the weekend, which gives them a Top Fifteen finish. BYU also finished in the top 10 in every event it competed. Many of came home with All-American honors, while Nachelle Mackie came home as a national champion.

Nachelle Mackie won the women’s 800-meter race with the fastest NCAA 800 time of the season, recording a 2:03:30 time. This time not only was the NCAA best season time, but Mackie also broke the school record for the 800.

Mackie had the third seed, with teammate Katie Palmer with the first seed, going into the 800 finals after the preliminaries Friday. However, Mackie stepped it up in the finals to bring home a national title.

“I took the lead early and although it wasn’t necessarily the position I wanted to be in initially,” Mackie said. “I just kind of realized no one else was going to take is so I needed to take it. Once I was in the lead I told myself that I wasn’t going to let anyone take it from me. It’s so exciting to be able to fulfill a dream.”

Mackie and Palmer received All-American honors for their performances in the 800. They, along with Sarah Edwards and Lacey Bleazard, placed sixth in the distance medley relay.
SEATTLE Feb 25, 2012 – Junior Nachelle Mackie led the BYU women’s track team at its first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championships on Saturday with the Cougars’ lone event win in the 800-meters.

“We got a lot done at this meet,” BYU head coach Patrick Shane said. “We were a little shorthanded because of the number of great athletes we have redshirting this indoor season but I thought we performed very well and set a number of personal records.”

Mackie crossed the line in 2:04.22 to take first in the event. The time is her second fastest of the season in the 800m. Senior Lacey Bleazard finished the race in seventh in 2:06.85.

Senior Katie Palmer nearly broke the BYU indoor mile record for the second time this season, but fell just short. Palmer finished the mile in 4:39.76, just .20 off the record pace. She finished second in the event and scored eight points for the team.

The high jump was one of the best events for BYU at the meet. Seniors Ada Robinson and Diana Blauer tied for third place by clearing 1.73m (5-8.00). Taylor Stapley also cleared the same height, but finished fifth overall because she needed more attempts to clear the bar.

Another strong field event for the Cougars was the triple jump. Junior Melissa Keltner set a new personal record with a mark of 12.02m (39-5.25), good enough for eighth place. Elizabeth Wilson also set a personal best mark by jumping 11.96m (39-3.00).

Also setting a season-and personal-best mark was Michaelanne Laurent in the 3000m. Laurent finished the race in 14th in 9:36.71.

Senior Christen Guenther, the top pole vaulter for BYU, did not pass her opening height in the event and did not place. Freshman Nicole Naatjes set a new personal best in the event by clearing 3.93m (12-10.75).

“This was a good experience for Christen because she had already automatically qualified for nationals,” Shane said. “This gave her a chance to work on coming in at a high opening height.”

The team finished seventh overall with 41 points. Stanford won the meet with 125 points, while Arizona finished second with 110 and Oregon third with 108.33.

Several BYU athletes will compete at the NCAA Indoor Championships in Nampa, Idaho beginning on March 8.Patrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244783292774392676noreply@blogger.comSeattle, WA, USA47.6062095 -122.332070847.520564 -122.4899993 47.691855 -122.1741423tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-1643387144976298994.post-72434790149672099402012-02-24T12:50:00.000-08:002012-03-29T17:02:27.529-07:00Women's DMR Team Breaks Record

Lacey Bleazard, Sarah Edwards, Nachelle Mackie and Katie Palmer combined to break the Dempsey Indoor Track Facility and Mountain Pacific Sports Federation distance medley record with a fourth-place finish in the event in 11:01.35 on February 24, 2012 in Seattle, Washington.

The team automatically qualified for the NCAA National Championships with the time. Although the Cougars broke both the facility and meet records, they still finished behind teams from Washington, Oregon and California.

In the lone individual distance event final of the day, Kendra Christensen led the Cougars in the 5000m in 17:28.59. Just behind Christensen were teammates Rachel Lange and Stephanie Jensen-Bills, who finished in 17:37.06 and 17:56.68, respectively.Patrickhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09244783292774392676noreply@blogger.com1
